Just hours after a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $600,000 for Karmelo Anthony and his family was shut down, a new fundraising effort has emerged to finance the convicted killer\u2019s appeal, even as Anthony claims he is too poor to afford legal representation.<\/p>\n

Anthony, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison after being convicted of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, filed a notice of appeal less than a day after the jury delivered its verdict. In court documents, the 19-year-old described himself as a \u201cpenniless, destitute, and indigent person\u201d who is unable to hire an attorney to handle his appeal.<\/p>\n

The filing has drawn fresh attention because Anthony\u2019s family previously collected approximately $625,000 through a GiveSendGo fundraiser launched after his arrest in the April 2025 stabbing. The campaign, organized by his mother, Kala Hayes, remained active throughout the legal proceedings before being shut down following his conviction.<\/p>\n
Now, a new campaign called the \u201cKarmelo Appellate Fund\u201d has been launched specifically to support the next phase of the legal battle.<\/p>\n
According to the fundraiser, the new account was created to provide \u201ccomplete transparency and accountability\u201d as Anthony seeks to challenge both his conviction and sentence. The page states that donations will be used for appellate attorneys, legal research, court-related expenses, and other costs associated with the appeals process.<\/p>\n
Hayes, who is listed as the organizer, immediately addressed the creation of the new fund, stressing that it is entirely separate from the original campaign. The fundraiser explains that the previous account focused on pre-trial needs, while the new effort is dedicated solely to financing Anthony\u2019s appeal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis fund is separate from the original family support fund to eliminate any confusion regarding the purpose and use of donations,\u201d the campaign states, while encouraging supporters who believe in \u201cdue process\u201d and \u201cfairness\u201d to contribute.<\/p>\n
The new fundraising push comes after GiveSendGo closed the original campaign, which had raised more than $600,000 despite widespread controversy surrounding the case. According to the fundraiser\u2019s description, those donations were never intended solely for legal fees. The campaign disclosed that the money would also be used for family relocation, transportation, counseling, security measures, and other living expenses resulting from the public fallout of the case.<\/p>\n
GiveSendGo later confirmed that the funds had been distributed over the past year for lawful purposes, including legal defense and relocation assistance, and said the campaign was closed because its stated purpose had been completed.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Anthony\u2019s defense attorney, Mike Howard, has confirmed that the appeal is officially underway, saying the legal team believes there are several issues that should be reviewed by higher courts. He described the appeal as a constitutional right available to every defendant.<\/p>\n
Anthony was convicted for the fatal stabbing of Metcalf during a confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, on April 2, 2025. Prosecutors argued that the dispute began after Metcalf asked Anthony to leave a team tent. Trial testimony alleged the confrontation escalated when Anthony pulled a folding knife from his backpack and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Anthony maintained throughout the trial that he acted in self-defense, but jurors rejected that claim before sentencing him to 35 years behind bars.<\/p>\n
