California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters received some of her own medicine on Tuesday, getting shouted down by fellow House members after verbally attacking Judiciary Committee Chairman and leading Speaker candidate Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).<\/p>\n

Amid the debate, which pitted Jordan against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, after Waters voiced her support for her party\u2019s candidate, she then took a shot at Jordan, calling him an \u201cinsurrectionist\u201d before shouts of opposition drowned her out.<\/p>\n

Politico reported that Jordan merely responded with a smirk, but another Republican, unnamed, said to Waters, \u201cHuh? What did the Communist say?\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Jordan lost the vote to become Speaker on Tuesday after several Republicans cast votes for someone else. All Democrats voted for Jeffries.<\/p>\n
But, the House of Representatives will\u00a0hold another vote\u00a0later on Wednesday after he fell 17 votes short of the 217 he needed to win.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re gonna keep going. I\u2019ve had great conversations, great discussions with our colleagues,\u201d Jordan said late Tuesday. \u201cNo one in our conference wants to see any type of coalition government with Democrats. So we\u2019re going to keep working, and we\u2019re going to get to the votes.\u201d<\/p>\n
The House will reconvene at 11 a.m. ET for the next scheduled vote, but many members of Congress are unsure of what to do next.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday night, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) told Fox News that anyone who claims to know what will happen next is \u201cfull of it.\u201d Malliotakis has stated that she will continue voting for Jordan and has predicted that his popularity will increase.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think there\u2019s some movement, and that\u2019s positive. So the idea is to build consensus, that\u2019s positive, not to jump ship just because it didn\u2019t work in the first round,\u201d she said. \u201cAs I see it, he\u2019s the person who can bring the factions together now. If he can\u2019t, quite frankly, then we have bigger problems.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Jordan has opponents in other Republican factions.<\/p>\n
Late on Tuesday, after Jordan failed to garner enough votes to become Speaker, the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal\u00a0issued\u00a0a scathing rebuke of the dysfunction among House Republicans.<\/p>\n
The statement from the board follows House Majority Leader Steve Scalise\u2019s (R-La.) withdrawal from the race last week due to pressure from Jordan\u2019s allies.\\<\/p>\n
\u201cWith each turn of the screw, the eight Republicans who deposed Mr. McCarthy look more foolish all the time. They didn\u2019t have a plan for what to do next. They didn\u2019t have an alternative candidate for Speaker. What kind of an idiot mutineer takes over the man-of-war, tosses the captain overboard, and then spends two weeks pulling ropes at random, hoping like hell that the thing will somehow drift ashore before the supplies run out?\u201d WSJ wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe People\u2019s House always includes some unserious characters, but now it has serious work to do,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe House needs a speaker as soon as possible. Expect another round of votes today. It\u2019s time for Republicans to come together.\u201d Jordan spokesperson Russell Dye told reporters.<\/p>\n
Last week, after he threw his hat into the ring to become Speaker, Jordan revealed that one of his first official acts would be to ensure that Israel has all it needs in its war against Hamas.<\/p>\n
\u201cSunday Morning Futures\u201d anchor Maria Bartiromo told the Ohio Republican during a show segment, \u201cTell me what your first directive would be as a speaker,\u201d to which he\u00a0responded, \u201cTo help the state of Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be some resolution on the floor to support the state of Israel,\u201d Jordan continued, adding that he planned to consult with House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and the Senate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
