Instead, she died early Sunday, August 2, 2026, at a clinic in the National District, as reported by\u00a0Noticias SIN.<\/p>\n<p>Her remains are being held at the\u00a0National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF)\u00a0and will be returned to the United States for burial after the required procedures are completed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For relatives, colleagues, and friends, DePaula\u2019s death has been especially difficult because it came at a time when both her personal life and professional career appeared to be entering a new chapter.<\/p>\n<p>A Life Dedicated to Service in More Than One Way<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alongside her work as a police officer, she spent the past four years serving as a\u00a0Christian pastor\u00a0with her husband, dedicating part of her life to preaching and serving her community.<\/p>\n<p>Those who knew DePaula remembered her as someone whose faith was visible in everyday interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Retired NYPD instructor David Marmol, who helped train DePaula after she joined the department, recalled that she\u00a0greeted people differently\u00a0than most recruits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHorrible news. You was such a beautiful soul. You would say God bless you instead of hi,\u201d Marmol wrote in an\u00a0Instagram tribute. \u201cYou had so many good questions. You had such a bright future. You will be missed by your family, friends and colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An Officer Whose Career Was Still Beginning<\/p>\n<p>DePaula joined the NYPD in January 2025, according to the New York Daily News (NYDN) and public employment records published by 50-a.org.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0records\u00a0show she later served with the\u00a046th Precinct Field Training Unit\u00a0before being assigned to the\u00a046th Precinct\u00a0in\u00a0June 2026, where she remained at the time of her death.<\/p>\n<p>Although she had served with the department for only about\u00a018 months, colleagues said she had already distinguished herself through her work.<\/p>\n<p>Five months before her death, DePaula stood before fellow officers and community members during the 46th Precinct\u2019s March Community Council meeting to receive the precinct\u2019s\u00a0Officer of the Month\u00a0award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to an official 46th Precinct\u00a0Facebook post, she was recognized for \u201coutstanding police work and dedication to the community.\u201d A photograph shared by the precinct shows DePaula standing beside Commanding Officer Deputy Inspector Moran as she accepted the recognition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only months later, the same law enforcement community was\u00a0mourning her loss. \u201cOur hearts are heavy with the loss of our sister P.O. Rebecca De Paula, who passed away while off duty after only 18 months on the job,\u201d Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry said in a statement provided to the\u00a0NYDN.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask all New Yorkers to keep her family, friends and coworkers in your prayers during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0New York Dominican Officers Organization (NYDO)\u00a0also honored DePaula in a public statement shared on\u00a0Instagram. \u201cIt is with profound sadness that we share the passing of NYDO member Police Officer Rebecca DePaula,\u201d the organization wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The organization asked supporters to keep DePaula\u2019s family, friends and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers, adding that\u00a0\u201cHer kindness, her service and memory will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Procedure That Brought Her to the Dominican Republic<\/p>\n<p>DePaula traveled to Santo Domingo to undergo\u00a0breast implant removal surgery. Relatives said she chose to have the implants removed because of a personal and spiritual conviction.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to\u00a0continue her life without the implants\u00a0as part of her Christian faith, they said, and never imagined the procedure would end in tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>DePaula\u2019s relatives told the\u00a0same publication\u00a0that after the procedure, she developed a\u00a0bacterial infection\u00a0that doctors said caused\u00a0severe diarrhea, further complicating her condition.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother said she was initially informed that DePaula was in\u00a0serious condition, but when she arrived at the clinic, she was told that her daughter had died.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DePaula\u2019s brother,\u00a0Edwin L\u00f3pez, said the news devastated the family. \u201cWe are in shock. It hurts a lot,\u201d he said, according to\u00a0Univision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As relatives make arrangements to return DePaula home to the United States, he said they continue trying to understand what happened. \u201cWe\u2019re still processing it, and many of us are wondering why this happened,\u201d L\u00f3pez added.<\/p>\n<p>DePaula\u2019s family has reportedly asked Dominican authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death and determine whether there was medical negligence or any irregularities during the medical care she received.<\/p>\n<p>Breast Implant Removal Is an Elective Procedure<\/p>\n<p>According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast implant removal \u2014 also known as\u00a0explant surgery\u00a0\u2014 is performed to remove breast implants and any scar tissue that has formed around them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The organization says the decision to undergo the procedure depends on several factors, including a\u00a0patient\u2019s overall health, whether an implant is leaking or has ruptured, and personal preference.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0ASPS\u00a0says surgeons should explain the procedure\u2019s potential risks before patients give informed consent. Those risks can include\u00a0anesthesia-related complications, bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, blood clots, persistent pain, poor wound healing, skin loss, scarring and the possibility of additional surgery, among other complications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her Death Comes Amid Broader Scrutiny of Cosmetic Procedures<\/p>\n<p>DePaula\u2019s death comes as cosmetic procedures in the Dominican Republic continue to receive increased public attention following several recent patient deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Noticias SIN reported that those cases have resulted in judicial investigations, the closure of health centers and renewed questions about oversight of clinics and the professionals performing\u00a0cosmetic procedures.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most recent involved\u00a0Rebecca Brizard, who died on\u00a0July 24\u00a0after cosmetic surgery at a facility in Santo Domingo Este.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities later determined that the establishment had been operating without the required health permit and alleged that the procedure had been performed by\u00a0a man identified as a barber\u00a0who was\u00a0not accredited\u00a0to practice as a plastic surgeon. The facility was later closed while the investigation continued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have not linked Brizard\u2019s case to DePaula\u2019s death.
