\nDolly Parton, Country Music Legend, Dies at 80 \u2014 Details and Family Statement<\/p>\n
Her nephew announced the death in an Instagram video on August 25. The news came only four days after the singer spoke publicly about her health and made it clear that, despite recent struggles, she still had plans for the future.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The \u201cJolene\u201d singer had been dealing with health problems for some time. In September 2025, she postponed a planned Las Vegas residency after doctors told her she needed several medical procedures. Months later, in May 2026, she canceled the shows altogether, though she reassured fans that she was responding well to treatment and getting better.<\/p>\n
Just days before her death, Parton explained that some of her health issues had been neglected while she was caring for her longtime husband, Carl Dean, before his death in March 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Brin Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I\u2019m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,\u201d her nephew says in the video.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThis video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven\u2019t truly felt it until now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seaver added: \u201cIt is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even then, Parton remained focused on working and bringing new projects to life. She said she still had \u201cso many things I want to achieve\u201d and intended to keep working for as long as she could.<\/p>\n

From a poor Tennessee childhood to country music royalty<\/p>\n
Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton grew up as one of 12 children in a family with very little money. Music entered her life early: she sang at her grandfather\u2019s church, began playing guitar as a child and started writing songs when she was only seven.<\/p>\n
After graduating from high school, Parton moved to Nashville in 1964 to pursue music professionally. Her breakthrough came after Porter Wagoner brought her onto The Porter Wagoner Show, introducing her to a much larger country audience.<\/p>\n
When she decided to leave Wagoner\u2019s show in 1974, Parton turned the difficult professional separation into one of the most famous songs of her career: \u201cI Will Always Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n
Years later, Whitney Houston transformed the song into a worldwide phenomenon with her version for The Bodyguard.<\/p>\n
Her success went far beyond country music<\/p>\n

Parton eventually crossed over into Hollywood as well. She made her film debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 comedy 9 to 5. Its title song became Parton\u2019s first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.<\/p>\n
She later appeared in movies including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, Steel Magnolias and Joyful Noise.<\/p>\n
Her achievements accumulated across decades. Parton won 11 Grammys, an Emmy, 10 CMA Awards, seven Academy of Country Music Awards and three American Music Awards. She also received two Academy Award nominations and was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
Her influence extended far beyond entertainment. Parton became known for her philanthropy, particularly through her Imagination Library, a program that provides free books to young children. She was also closely associated with Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park bearing her name.<\/p>\n

Nearly 60 years with Carl Dean<\/p>\n
She married Carl Thomas Dean in May 1966, and although he largely avoided public attention, their marriage endured for nearly six decades. Parton often joked that spending time apart helped their relationship last, while describing Dean as one of her strongest supporters behind the scenes.<\/p>\n
Dean died on March 3, 2025. Parton later released the song \u201cIf You Hadn\u2019t Been There\u201d in his honor and spoke openly about how profound the loss had been after spending most of her adult life with him.<\/p>\n
His death also came during a period when Parton was experiencing her own health difficulties.<\/p>\n
