What Happened in Those Terrifying 60 Seconds?<\/p>\n
Times Square was crowded on Monday afternoon when the ordinary noise of Midtown gave way to shouting, flashing police lights, and a confrontation unfolding beside tourists and commuters.<\/p>\n

At approximately 4:26 p.m., investigators said Pamela was threatening people with two knives near Seventh Avenue and West 42nd Street. New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the ensuing violence as a “random and unprovoked” attack.<\/p>\n
The first victim, a 68-year-old man, had just emerged from the subway and was waiting to cross the street with his wife. Police said Pamela pulled the knives from a bag, waved them, and reportedly stabbed him in the abdomen.<\/p>\n

While the injured man and his wife were left in the confusion behind her, Pamela continued toward 42nd Street. There, authorities said she approached Erin, a stranger who had no known connection to either Pamela or the first victim.<\/p>\n

Erin was also stabbed in the abdomen. According to ABC7, the two attacks occurred within moments of each other, turning a busy intersection into a scene of fear before many witnesses could understand what they were seeing.<\/p>\n
The 68-year-old man was rushed to a hospital with injuries initially described as life-threatening. Officials later said his condition had stabilized, but Erin died after being taken to the hospital. She was only 32.<\/p>\n

After the two stabbings, Pamela allegedly ran north toward the NYPD substation in Times Square. Witnesses flagged down officers, directing them toward the armed woman as she approached a place already filled with police.<\/p>\n
The first shots were fired at approximately 4:27 p.m. Officials later explained that the confrontation itself lasted around four minutes as officers tried to persuade Pamela to surrender the knives.<\/p>\n

Cellphone footage captured officers facing her in the street. Commissioner Tisch said they repeatedly ordered Pamela to put down the weapons, but she refused.<\/p>\n
“During the encounter, she told the officers, ‘I’m not dropping anything. I would rather kill both of you,'” Commissioner Tisch explained. “She repeated, ‘I will kill you.'”<\/p>\n
Officers deployed Tasers twice in an attempt to stop her. Police said Pamela then swung the knives and advanced toward them, prompting two officers to fire their service weapons.<\/p>\n

Pamela was struck and transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Investigators recovered two knives from the scene and later released an image of the weapons.<\/p>\n

Officials emphasized that the attack was not believed to be connected to terrorism. Pamela had no previous NYPD arrest history, but police said she had a “documented mental health history,” including incidents in 2018 and 2019, which could be seen as the possible motive in the investigation.<\/p>\n

Why Could Her Father Not Accept What She Had Done?<\/p>\n
Mario Cisneros knew his daughter had struggled with her mental health. He also believed she was getting treatment, leaving him unable to understand how a woman with a master’s degree in psychology could have taken another person’s life.<\/p>\n

The education she had worked for made the contradiction even more painful for him. Speaking in Spanish to the press, Mario resisted the idea that his daughter should be remembered only as the armed woman seen confronting police in Times Square.<\/p>\n
She was not a beast, he said. She was a human being.<\/p>\n

His defense of her humanity did not become an attempt to excuse the harm she reportedly caused. Instead, he turned toward Erin’s grieving family and the injured survivor with words that carried his shame, disbelief, and sorrow at once.<\/p>\n

“I am sorry for what my daughter did. I am suffering like they are suffering,” Mario told CBS News.<\/p>\n
His pain, of course, cannot mirror the loss of Erin’s family, who must now live without her. Yet Mario’s apology revealed a different kind of torment, that of a father mourning his daughter while also knowing another family was grieving because of what she supposedly did.<\/p>\n

What Question Is Her Mother Still Asking?<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Pamela’s mother was wrestling with another part of the afternoon. She had watched or learned of the confrontation involving several officers and could not stop wondering whether her daughter might have been taken alive.<\/p>\n

“There were so many police… why didn’t they grab her by the arm?” she asked in an exclusive FOX 5 interview on September 1.<\/p>\n
Her question came from a mother’s grief, but police presented a sharply different picture of the danger officers faced. They said Pamela was holding two knives, had already allegedly stabbed two strangers, resisted repeated commands, remained standing after two Taser deployments, and moved toward officers while threatening to kill them.<\/p>\n

Pamela’s brother was just as stunned by the accusations. “She’s never been violent,” he said, describing a sister who seemed impossible to match with the figure at the center of the cellphone footage.<\/p>\n
For her family, the final minutes of Pamela’s life collided with every memory that came before them. They were being told that someone they considered nonviolent had killed one stranger, gravely wounded another, threatened police officers, and died in the street, all in the space of a few minutes.<\/p>\n

“I knew it was mental health issues,” Clyde said. “That’s a big epidemic out here, bro. We gotta get that under control.”<\/p>\n
Another New Yorker, Bob Blomeley, said a stranger had swung at him on the subway that same day and missed. His response was to remain alert, limit distractions from his phone and headphones, and pay closer attention to the people around him.<\/p>\n
For visitors, the sight was even harder to process. One tourist from Ireland said violence of that nature was unfamiliar at home and that seeing armed police officers added to the shock.<\/p>\n

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his gratitude towards the cops who were at the scene, as their actions helped prevent a bigger tragedy. He also acknowledged that the victims’ families had been shattered and said the city would continue to hold them close.<\/p>\n

The mayor also created an Office of Community Safety intended to involve mental health workers in certain emergencies. He said this confrontation did not qualify because Pamela allegedly posed an immediate violent threat after stabbing two people.<\/p>\n
The NYPD is expected to conduct an internal investigation, and the mayor said body-camera footage would be released publicly. That review may provide a clearer picture of Pamela’s confrontation with officers, but it cannot return Erin to her family or erase the trauma carried by the surviving man and his wife.<\/p>\n
