Before the royal titles, world headlines, and millions of fans, she was just a little girl warming up microwave dinners and wondering where exactly she fit in.<\/p>\n

Born to a Black mother and a white father in Los Angeles, this girl didn\u2019t grow up feeling like a Hollywood story in the making. In fact, she often felt like she didn\u2019t belong anywhere \u2014 not in school cliques, not in beauty standards, not even in strangers\u2019 assumptions about her own family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American. I\u2019m half Black and half white,\u201d she once shared.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s all part of her story that\u2019s shaped everything \u2014 from the way she saw herself to the strength she had to find when the world finally did start watching.<\/p>\n

Raised on TV dinners and tough questions
\nAs a child, Meghan Markle described herself as a \u201clatchkey kid,\u201d coming home to an empty house while her parents worked long hours. Her mom, Doria Ragland, made a living as a makeup artist and her dad, Thomas Markle Sr, worked in television.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up with a lot of fast food and also a lot of TV tray dinners,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWatching \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 and having a lot of microwaveable kids\u2019 meals\u2026 that was normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, there seems to be some disagreement about what Meghan\u2019s childhood was really like. Her father has challenged his daughter\u2019s account, saying her memories \u2014 especially about how she ate as a child \u2014 don\u2019t match his own version of events.<\/p>\n

He also claimed that he personally picked Meghan up from school every day, or sent a car for her if he was too busy.<\/p>\n
What really left a mark on Meghan during her childhood were the constant stares and questions whenever she and her Black mother were out in public.<\/p>\n
A dark-skinned mom
\nMeghan shared that many people assumed she was a white woman, which led some to question how she could have a dark-skinned mom, who once recalled being mistaken for the nanny in public.<\/p>\n
\u201dI just remember my mom telling me stories about taking me [to] the grocery store and a woman going, \u2018Whose child is that?\u2019 She\u2019s like, \u2018It\u2019s my child.\u2019 \u2018No, you must be the nanny. Where\u2019s her mom?\u2019\u201d Meghan said.<\/p>\n
After her parents split up, Meghan was raised by both of them until she turned nine. After that, her father took on the primary caregiving role while her mother focused on building her career.<\/p>\n

Meghan lived with her dad full-time until she left for college at eighteen.<\/p>\n
Her mother moved to a predominantly Black neighborhood outside the Valley. The shift was jarring \u2014 but she found her circle in a tight-knit group of women who helped raise her.<\/p>\n
\u2018We had a nice network of women who really helped me raise Meg. She was always so easy to get along with, congenial, making friends. She was a very empathic child, very mature,\u201d Doria said in one of the episodes of Meghan\u2019s Netflix show.<\/p>\n
Still, their relationship wasn\u2019t always traditional.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember asking [her] did I feel like her mom,\u201d her mother recalled, \u201cand she told me I felt like her older, controlling sister.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201dI was not the pretty one\u201d
\nFor Meghan, adolescence was filled with the kind of insecurities many can relate to \u2014 except hers were sharpened by feeling like an outsider.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was a big nerd growing up,\u201d she confessed. \u201cPeople don\u2019t understand that about me. Like, I was not the pretty one. My identity was wrapped up in being the smart one.\u201d<\/p>\n
She used that intellect early on. At age 11, she successfully challenged a sexist TV commercial. Her writing skills, even then, were a superpower.<\/p>\n
Despite financial struggles, small moments felt like luxury.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up on the $4.99 salad bar at Sizzler,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI knew how hard my parents worked to afford this\u2026 and I felt lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dAnd as a Girl Scout, when my troop would go to dinner for a big celebration, it was back to that same salad bar or The Old Spaghetti Factory \u2013 because that\u2019s what those families could afford.\u201d<\/p>\n
Things changed when her dad won $750,000 in the lottery. Her half-brother said it helped put Meghan on the path she\u2019d later walk with such fierce focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat money allowed [her] to go to the best schools and get the best training,\u201d he said. \u201c[She] doesn\u2019t stop until she gets what she wants.\u201d<\/p>\n
Early hustle, Hollywood dreams
\nEven as a kid, Meghan dreamed big. At 11, she wrote a letter to her principal promising to make their school famous once she made it.<\/p>\n
She wasn\u2019t kidding. By 13, she was working jobs from babysitting to slinging donuts at a stand called Little Orbit. Her work ethic never stopped.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, she found love for acting while hanging out on the set of Married\u2026 with Children, where her dad worked as a lighting director.<\/p>\n
\u201cA really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n
But teenage Meghan was still figuring out who she was.<\/p>\n
\u201dI wasn\u2019t black enough\u201d
\n\u201cMy teens were even worse \u2014 grappling with how to fit in,\u201d she wrote in a blog post years later. \u201cBeing biracial, I fell somewhere in between.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also faced challenges early in her acting career, partly because she was seen as \u201cethnically ambiguous.\u201d As she put it, \u201cI wasn\u2019t black enough for the black roles and I wasn\u2019t white enough for the white ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a constant battle with myself\u2026 to be as cool\/as hip\/as smart\/as \u2018whatever\u2019 as everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n
At 33, though, things shifted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am 33 years old today. And I am happy,\u201d she wrote. \u201cTo figure out how to be kind to yourself\u2026 to feel [happiness] \u2014 it takes time.\u201d<\/p>\n
From Suits to St. George\u2019s chapel
\nThat little girl who felt invisible would grow up to become Rachel Zane on Suits, and eventually \u2014 Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.<\/p>\n
She met Prince Harry in 2016. Two years later, they married at Windsor Castle. By 2021, they had two children: Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.<\/p>\n
But life as a royal mom wasn\u2019t without terrifying challenges.<\/p>\n
A postpartum nightmare
\nIn April 2025, Meghan launched her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. In her first episode, she revealed something few had known: a life-threatening health scare after giving birth.<\/p>\n
