In fact, she often felt like she didn\u2019t belong anywhere \u2014 not in school cliques, not in beauty standards, not even in strangers\u2019 assumptions about her own family.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\" style=\"margin: 8px 0; clear: both;\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1691648\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy dad is Caucasian and my mom is African American. I\u2019m half Black and half white,\u201d she once shared.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px 0; clear: both;\"><!-- responsive 2 --><\/div>\n<p>But it\u2019s all part of her story that\u2019s shaped everything \u2014 from the way she saw herself to the strength she had to find when the world finally did start watching.<\/p>\n<p>Raised on TV dinners and tough questions<br \/>\nAs a child, Meghan Markle described herself as a \u201clatchkey kid,\u201d coming home to an empty house while her parents worked long hours. Where\u2019s her mom?\u2019\u201d Meghan said.<\/p>\n<p>After her parents split up, Meghan was raised by both of them until she turned nine. The shift was jarring \u2014 but she found her circle in a tight-knit group of women who helped raise her.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We had a nice network of women who really helped me raise Meg. She was always so easy to get along with, congenial, making friends. She was a very empathic child, very mature,\u201d Doria said in one of the episodes of Meghan\u2019s Netflix show.<\/p>\n<p>Still, their relationship wasn\u2019t always traditional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember asking [her] did I feel like her mom,\u201d her mother recalled, \u201cand she told me I felt like her older, controlling sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI was not the pretty one\u201d<br \/>\nFor Meghan, adolescence was filled with the kind of insecurities many can relate to \u2014 except hers were sharpened by feeling like an outsider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a big nerd growing up,\u201d she confessed. \u201cPeople don\u2019t understand that about me. Like, I was not the pretty one. My identity was wrapped up in being the smart one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She used that intellect early on. At age 11, she successfully challenged a sexist TV commercial.
