(KCTV) &#8211; As the <a title=\"https:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/sports\/nfl\/chiefs\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/sports\/nfl\/chiefs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Chiefs<\/a> approached the 2026 offseason and free agency, the team was creeping toward $60 million over the salary cap. A contract restructure with its star player will help get that number to a more manageable figure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to <a title=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/chiefs-open-up-43-56m-in-cap-room-with-mahomes-restructure\" href=\"https:\/\/overthecap.com\/chiefs-open-up-43-56m-in-cap-room-with-mahomes-restructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap<\/a>, the Chiefs converted $54.45 million of quarterback Patrick Mahomes\u2019 salary next season into a signing bonus, opening $43.56 million in cap room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Chiefs remain about $11 million over the cap number of about $303 million. His salary number drops to below <a title=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/21751\/patrick-mahomes\/contract\/summary\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/21751\/patrick-mahomes\/contract\/summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$40 million per year in 2028<\/a>.
