Marshawn Kneeland\u2019s family is speaking out following his death at the age of 24.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0statement posted to Facebook\u00a0on Thursday, Nov. 6, Marshawn\u2019s relative Nicole Kneeland-Woods shared that the family is grieving the unexpected loss of the Dallas Cowboys defensive end, who\u00a0died from a likely self-inflicted gunshot wound\u00a0on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are devastated by this tremendous loss and are still processing the depth of our grief,\u201d Nicole wrote on behalf of the Kneeland family. \u201cAs Marshawn was making his mark on the football field with the Dallas Cowboys, he held an even more special place off the field \u2014 as a devoted son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, and friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued, \u201cHe was kind, determined, humble and full of love. His light shone brightly in every life he touched, and his spirit will continue to live on through the countless hearts he inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n Nicole added that the family is \u201cdeeply grateful\u201d for the love and support they\u2019ve received.<\/p>\n \u201cDuring this difficult time, we ask for privacy as we come together as a family to honor and remember Marshawn\u2019s life and legacy,\u201d she concluded in the statement.<\/p>\n Kneeland died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading Texas DPS troopers on a chase north of Dallas on Wednesday night, authorities said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.<\/p>\n The Grand Rapids, Mich. native fled his vehicle after it crashed in Frisco, minutes away from Cowboys headquarters, and was found near his car in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 6.<\/p>\n In addition to family and fans, his teammates are mourning the loss of the promising young second-year player, who\u00a0scored his first NFL touchdown on\u00a0Monday Night Football\u00a0<\/em>two days before his death.<\/p>\n \u201cTragic loss, I hurt, heavy heavy heart today,\u201d Cowboys quarterback\u00a0Dak Prescott\u00a0told reporters on Thursday. \u201cI hurt for Marshawn, I hurt for his family, I hurt for his girlfriend, I hurt for every single one of my teammates. This is a pain you don\u2019t wish upon anybody. You wish none of us had to go through this.
