Iran executed a 19-year-old champion wrestler in a public hanging Thursday along with two other people who were arrested during the\u00a0brutal crackdown on anti-regime protesters<\/a>\u00a0in January.<\/p>\n

Saleh Mohammadi, a rising star from Qom, was allegedly tortured to confess to the capital crime of waging war against God, with the teen executed without a fair trial, according to human rights groups.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis execution was a blatant political murder, part of the Islamic Republic\u2019s pattern of targeting athletes to crush dissent and terrorize society,\u201d Nima Far, a human rights activist and Iranian combat athlete,\u00a0told Fox News.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mohammadi, along with fellow protesters Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoudi, were accused of killing two police officers \u201cwith knives and swords\u201d during the January protests, according to Iranian state media.<\/p>\n

Despite appeals from the US, the protesters were found guilty and executed by Tehran.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International slammed the executions, alleging that the men were denied \u201cadequate defence and forced to make \u2018confessions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The humanitarian group said the trio were pushed through \u201cfast-tracked proceedings that bore no resemblance to a meaningful trial.\u201d<\/p>\n

Far said Thursday\u2019s execution was a haunting repetition of the\u00a02020 execution of champion wrestler Navid Afkari<\/a>, who was convicted of killing an Iranian security guard during a 2018 protest.<\/p>\n

Far called on the International Olympic Committee and United World Wrestling organizations to take action against Iran over its brutality against athletes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran must be banned from international competitions until it halts executions of protesters and athletes, releases those jailed in sham trials, and ends retaliation against competitors who speak out or defect,\u201d Far said.\u00a0Fears are high that Iran will roll out more executions following mass arrests during the Jan. 8 and 9 protests, which saw Tehran\u2019s security forces\u00a0kill more than 7,000 demonstrators<\/a>, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.<\/p>\n
