President Donald Trump warned Iran that continued assassination threats made by leaders in Tehran would be met with the country getting \u201cblown up\u201d and \u201ctotal obliteration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, they shouldn\u2019t be doing it but I\u2019ve left notification,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnything ever happens, we\u2019re going to blow the whole \u2014 the whole country\u2019s going to get blown up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden-era Intelligence officials briefed Trump about the alleged threats against him during his presidential campaign in 2024. Former Attorney General Merrick Garland said the plot was retaliation for the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani by the U.S. in 2020, during Trump\u2019s first administration.<\/p>\n

Despite being briefed by his administration, Trump on Tuesday said President Biden \u201cshould have said something\u201d on the matter, adding that presidents should defend each other on such matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I have very firm instructions,\u201d Trump continued. \u201cAnything happens, they\u2019re going to wipe them off the face of this earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also spoke about the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran in Geneva.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you expecting from these Iran talks in Geneva?\u201d a reporter asked Trump aboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I\u2019ll be involved in those talks indirectly, and they\u2019ll be very important. We\u2019ll see what can happen. Typically, Iran\u2019s a very tough negotiator; they\u2019re good negotiators \u2014 or bad negotiators. I would say they\u2019re bad negotiators because we could have had a deal instead of sending the B2s to knock out their nuclear potential. We had to send the B2s. I hope they\u2019re going to be more reasonable. They want to make a deal,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you been told that a deal is next to impossible?\u201d the reporter followed up.<\/p>\n

Trump replied, \u201cNo. I think they want to make a deal. I don\u2019t think they want the consequences of not making a deal. They want to make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump previously said that he instructed officials to destroy Iran if they killed him.<\/p>\n

The president said this after signing an executive order right after taking office that gave him all the tools he needed to talk to Iran\u2019s government and put as much pressure on Tehran as possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey haven\u2019t done that and that would be a terrible thing for them to do,\u201d Trump said at the time. \u201cNot because of me \u2014 if they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end. I\u2019ve left instructions, if they do it, they get obliterated, there won\u2019t be anything left. And, they shouldn\u2019t be able to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump warned last week that the United States could send additional warships toward Iran if ongoing diplomatic negotiations fail to produce a deal, signaling that military pressure could increase as talks over Tehran\u2019s nuclear program stall.<\/p>\n

In remarks to Axios, Trump said the administration is considering deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group to the region in addition to the USS Abraham Lincoln and 9 additional warships already positioned near Iran, though he expressed hope that a diplomatic agreement can still be reached.<\/p>\n

\u201cEither we will make a deal or we will have to do something very tough like last time,\u201d the president told Axios on Tuesday, a reference to the bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast time they didn\u2019t believe I would do it. They overplayed their hand,\u201d Trump added. \u201cWe have an armada that is heading there and another one might be going.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president emphasized that the United States is seeking to persuade Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions, halt the development of its ballistic missile program, and end support for militant proxy groups. Iranian officials have so far resisted expanding negotiations beyond nuclear-related issues.<\/p>\n

He described the nuclear issue as a \u201cmatter of course\u201d part of any negotiation, but also insisted that an agreement with Iran must also address Tehran\u2019s ballistic missile stockpiles, per Axios.<\/p>\n

Trump said the US \u201ccan make a great deal with Iran,\u201d and Tehran \u201cvery much wants to make a deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments came ahead of a planned visit to Washington, D.C. by Benjamin Netanyahu, who is expected to press for a tougher U.S. stance and broader terms for any Iran deal that would include constraints on Tehran\u2019s missile capabilities and regional activities.<\/p>\n

Before heading to DC, the Israeli leader previewed some of what he and Trump were going to discuss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will present to the president our understanding of the principles of the negotiations (with Iran) \u2013 the essential principles that are important not only to Israel \u2013 but to everyone who wants peace and security in the Middle East,\u201d Netanyahu told reporters, per the New York Post.<\/p>\n

The administration has already bolstered its military presence in the Middle East, with multiple warships and aircraft deployed as a means of deterrence and leverage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
