The man accused of the attempted Trump<\/a> shooting at the White House dinner has revealed the chilling reason why he did it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the early evening of Saturday, April 25, 2026, one of Washington DC\u2019s most glamorous annual traditions came to an abrupt and terrifying halt.<\/p>\n

The White House Correspondents\u2019 Association dinner \u2014 a black-tie event at the Washington Hilton Hotel bringing together journalists, politicians, celebrities, and the president himself \u2014 descended into chaos when a gunman rushed a security checkpoint just outside the ballroom.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump was hustled from the room. The First Lady went down to the floor. A Secret Service agent was shot. And a 31-year-old from California, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, was tackled to the ground.<\/p>\n

The dinner was in full swing. Trump, Vice President JD Vance, First Lady Melania Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and several cabinet officials were all present in the ballroom \u2014 a concentration of executive power unusual even by Washington standards, a fact that would later prompt serious questions about security protocols, per CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mentalist Oz Pearlman, who had been performing onstage at the moment the chaos began, found himself face-to-face with the president as Secret Service agents brought Trump down to the floor directly in front of him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never forget the image for my whole life<\/a>,\u201d he told CNN<\/a>. \u201cWe just looked at each other for about two seconds. I thought, \u2018Oh no, are we about to die?’\u201d<\/p>\n

JD Vance was the first of the senior officials rushed from the room. Trump, by his own account, was not cooperating easily with the evacuation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was surrounded by great people, and I probably made them act a little bit more slowly,\u201d he told CBS News\u2019 60 Minutes the following day. \u201cI wanted to see what was happening. I wasn\u2019t making it that easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said agents eventually asked him and Melania to drop to the floor, and both complied. Less than an hour after the shooting, Trump posted on Truth Social that the gunman \u2018has been apprehended.\u2019<\/p>\n

The suspect was identified by law enforcement as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, California, a quiet suburb of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

His profile, as it emerged in the hours and days following the attack, was one of the most disorienting aspects of the entire story.<\/p>\n

Allen was, by all external measures, an extraordinarily accomplished young man. He had graduated from the California Institute of Technology \u2014 Caltech \u2014 in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering, and had most recently completed a master\u2019s in computer science at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2025, per the LA Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

His LinkedIn profile described him as a mechanical engineer, game developer, and teacher. He had been named teacher of the month in December 2024 by C2 Education, a tutoring firm specialising in college preparation in Torrance.<\/p>\n

His professor at Cal State, Bin Tang, described him to CBS News<\/a> as \u2018a very good student indeed, always sitting in the first row of my class, paying attention, and frequently emailing me with coursework questions. Soft spoken, very polite, a good fellow. I am very shocked to see the news.\u2019<\/p>\n

Students who had been tutored by Allen as recently as two weeks before the attack described him as \u2018entirely normal and friendly.\u2019<\/p>\n

Neighbours at the Torrance home he shared with his parents described his family as pleasant and unremarkable. \u201cWe see them every day and we just say hi and they\u2019re very nice,\u201d one told the Los Angeles Times. \u201cThey\u2019re peaceful people.\u201d<\/p>\n

While at Caltech, Allen had been a member of the Christian fellowship. He also registered a trademark in 2019 for a non-violent video game he had designed and released online.<\/p>\n

Federal campaign finance records show he donated $25 to ActBlue for Kamala Harris\u2019 presidential campaign in October 2024. He was registered to vote with no party preference.<\/p>\n

Investigators later found that Allen had attended a \u2018No Kings\u2019 protest in California and was reportedly part of a group called \u2018The Wide Awakes.\u2019<\/p>\n

Family members told investigators he would regularly go to the shooting range to train with his legally purchased firearms \u2014 a shotgun bought in August 2025 and a semiautomatic pistol purchased in 2023.<\/p>\n

They also said he made increasingly radical comments and constantly referenced a vague plan to do \u2018something\u2019 to fix problems with the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey thought he was very intelligent,\u201d said Dylan Wakayama, president of the Asian American Civic Trust, whose student volunteers had been tutored by Allen. \u201cThey were completely shocked when I told them that this all went down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the shooting, Allen had sent written communications to members of his family, per the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of them \u2014 his brother \u2014 notified police in New London, Connecticut, after receiving the writings, though that contact did not come until approximately 10:49 p.m., around two hours after the shots were fired.<\/p>\n

His sister separately told investigators that Allen had a tendency toward radical statements and had for some time been referencing a plan to take some kind of action.<\/p>\n

The document investigators found in Allen\u2019s hotel room \u2014 described by the New York Post<\/a> and confirmed as authentic by federal officials \u2014 laid out his motivations in explicit detail.<\/p>\n

He called himself the \u2018Friendly Federal Assassin.\u2019 He listed his targets from highest to lowest priority, with Trump administration officials at the top. The FBI director, Kash Patel, was explicitly excluded. Hotel staff, hotel guests, and Capitol Police were designated as non-targets \u2018if at all possible.\u2019<\/p>\n

The manifesto opened with an apology to those who knew him. It then described his motivations in language that drew on both political and religious grievances.<\/p>\n

It stated that he was \u2018no longer willing to permit a p***phile, r**ist, and traitor\u2019 to implicate him through inaction, and quoted a moral framework about complicity in oppression.<\/p>\n

It referenced US<\/a> strikes on drug-smuggling boats, conditions in detention facilities, and a range of administration actions, concluding: \u201cI experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investigators confirmed the document reflected anti-Trump sentiment throughout.<\/p>\n

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told multiple broadcasters that based on preliminary findings, Allen was \u2018targeting members of the administration\u2019 and that Trump himself was a \u2018likely\u2019 target.<\/p>\n

He said depending on the ongoing investigation, Allen could face charges including the attempted assassination of the president, on top of existing charges of assault of a federal officer, discharging a firearm, and attempting to kill a federal officer.<\/p>\n

Trump, speaking on Fox News<\/a>, described Allen as \u2018a sick guy\u2019 with \u201ca lot of hatred in his heart\u201d and claimed the manifesto showed he \u2018hates Christians.\u2019<\/p>\n

He grew visibly frustrated during his 60 Minutes interview when correspondent Norah O\u2019Donnell read portions of the document aloud, calling her \u2018a disgrace\u2019 for doing so.<\/p>\n

Allen was not cooperating with investigators as of Sunday, though people who knew him were speaking with law enforcement.<\/p>\n

He was not struck by gunfire during his arrest but was taken to the hospital for evaluation. His arraignment in federal court was scheduled for Monday.<\/p>\n
