Experts reveal disturbing detail buried inside Nancy Guthrie ransom note that has investigators stumped

Experts Analyze Disturbing Wording in Nancy Guthrie Ransom Note

As the search continues for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie, investigators and crime experts are zeroing in on the unusual language used in ransom notes reportedly tied to her disappearance — language some believe could offer critical clues about what happened to her.

According to commentary from media covering the case, two notes are believed to be credible, containing details — including references to Nancy’s Apple Watch — that some say only someone involved in her disappearance would know.

The Word “We” Raises Questions

Among the most discussed details is the use of the word “we” in the notes, which has fueled speculation over whether more than one person is involved.

Homicide detective Chris McDonough, who has investigated hundreds of crime scenes, weighed in on the matter, suggesting the wording could indicate multiple people were involved in the alleged abduction.

“I’ve always believed it was more than one person,” one commentator said, pointing to the physical difficulty of moving an unconscious or unresponsive person alone. “It just didn’t seem like something that one person could do by themselves.”

“Buried With Nature” Sparks Grim Theory

Perhaps the most unsettling phrase in the notes is the reference to Nancy being “buried with nature” — language some believe points to a shallow grave somewhere in the desert near her home.

“She’s probably within 500 yards of that house, dead in the desert,” one commentator said, citing a conversation with a longtime homicide investigator, who warned that wildlife in the area could make recovering her remains difficult, if not impossible.

The note’s vocabulary has also drawn attention online, with some speculating the writer may have an advanced vocabulary — possibly tied to reading, poetry, or even time spent in prison.

“The simplest explanation is oftentimes the right one,” one commentator said, dismissing more elaborate theories in favor of straightforward interpretations of the note’s wording.

A Daughter’s Emotional Plea

The notes have also cast new light on an emotional video Savannah Guthrie posted in February, just a day after the second note was reportedly received, pleading for her mother’s safe return alongside her siblings, Cameron and Annie.

“We received your message and we understand,” Savannah said in the video. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace.”

Looking back on the message now, some believe the family may have already suspected the worst at the time it was recorded.

Questions Over Lack of Communication Channels

Adding to the frustration surrounding the case, reports indicate the family had no direct way to communicate with whoever sent the ransom notes — raising questions about why agencies such as the FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Office didn’t help facilitate contact.

Commentators covering the case have also questioned why more visible search efforts — including cadaver dogs, drones, and organized grid searches — haven’t taken place, especially given the reward being offered for information.

“I want to see more searches,” one commentator said. “I want to see more press conferences, and I want to see more dogs and drones.”

As the investigation continues, Nancy Guthrie’s family says they remain hopeful for answers, even as experts caution that a recovery, rather than a rescue, may now be the most likely outcome.
