Donald Trump Makes a Surprise Move at Turkey Airport Amid Reports of a Threat Against Him – Video & Details
New reporting has filled in the gaps of a seemingly routine departure, which is being viewed through a very different lens.
Donald Trump made what looked like a perfectly ordinary departure from Turkey, but what reportedly happened after he disappeared from the cameras was anything but routine.
Footage from Ankara airport is now giving a much clearer look at the remarkable operation that allegedly unfolded behind the scenes.

The president had been in Ankara for a NATO summit in July 2026, and his departure initially appeared straightforward. Trump was filmed boarding the older Air Force One on July 8, with television cameras capturing him entering the aircraft before takeoff.
But according to a detailed BBC News report, Trump reportedly never left Turkey aboard that plane. Instead, the public boarding was allegedly the first stage of an elaborate security maneuver prompted by intelligence about a possible Iranian threat against the president and his aircraft.

The BBC reported that U.S. officials told CBS News that authorities had detected what was considered a credible Iranian threat to fire a missile at the plane. The White House, however, has not formally confirmed that the reported secret aircraft switch took place.
Trump had already spoken publicly about the danger he believed he faced, saying during the summit that he was Iran’s “number one target.” The reported maneuver also came one day after the U.S. renewed military strikes on Iran following a breakdown in negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the war.

There was another unusual wrinkle to Trump’s travel plans even before the airport operation. He had arrived in Turkey aboard the newer Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar but announced that he would depart aboard the older presidential jet “for old time’s sake.” Then came the part that was apparently hidden from almost everyone watching.
A Catering Truck May Have Been the Key to the Entire Operation
After Trump boarded the old Air Force One in view of cameras, he was reportedly moved out of the aircraft on its far side with the assistance of a catering truck that could be raised to the level of the plane.
The vehicle then traveled across the airport to a nearby C-32A, a modified Boeing 757 commonly used for government travel and often associated with the vice president. That catering truck appears to have been the key to the entire operation.

A BBC graphic reconstructing the reported maneuver shows the catering truck positioned on the opposite side of Air Force One from the area where members of the media were boarding. It then shows the truck moving away toward the nearby C-32A, whose external stairs could be seen on the tarmac.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly boarded that smaller aircraft separately using the outside stairs, which, according to the report, helped make the flight appear routine.
Meanwhile, journalists and some White House staff were still aboard the old Air Force One, and apparently had no idea that Trump was no longer traveling with them.

They were reportedly instructed to keep the aircraft’s window shades closed. A White House pool producer later described the request as one of the strange moments of the flight. According to the BBC account, when a photographer briefly opened a shade, the photographer was quickly instructed to shut it again and was told that the order had come at the request of the Secret Service.
That same producer also recalled seeing what appeared to be two catering trucks, one near the front and another near the back of the aircraft, when members of the press arrived.
Their van had reportedly been positioned too far back in the airport motorcade for journalists to get their own clear photograph of Trump boarding — another detail that, in hindsight, has attracted attention.

Even the Plane’s Call Sign Was Part of the Ruse
Even the aircraft call signs reportedly helped maintain the illusion. Technically, “Air Force One” is the call sign assigned to any U.S. Air Force aircraft while the president is actually aboard. But during this operation, the C-32A reportedly carrying Trump used the call sign “Reach 18,” while the aircraft carrying journalists continued operating as “AF1.”
That meant anyone following the presidential flight could reasonably have believed Trump remained aboard the familiar jet.

The Airport Videos Make the Story Even More Striking
Video footage from the airport has now made the sequence even more fascinating. CBS News shared footage showing the catering truck pulling away from Air Force One after Trump had boarded and traveling toward the second government aircraft that ultimately carried the president out of Ankara.
Another widely shared post on X zoomed in on the same operation and described the scene in much more cinematic terms. “This is a JAMES BOND-style mission,” the post declared.
Trump Then Flew Out on a Different Aircraft
Trump then reportedly flew to the United Kingdom aboard the C-32A while the old Air Force One continued with the journalists and staff. Once in the UK, however, the operation apparently became even more complicated.
The president later reboarded the old Air Force One and was publicly seen descending from it after the aircraft landed at RAF Mildenhall, creating the appearance of an ordinary presidential journey. Exactly how he was transferred from the C-32A back to the legacy aircraft has not been made clear.
He subsequently switched again, transferring to the newer, Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8 for the flight back to Washington.
Then Trump Gave Reporters a Remark They Won’t Soon Forget
It was during that later flight that reporters finally got a tantalizing comment from Trump about what had happened. He did not directly explain the secret plane switch, but when journalists asked why they had been told to keep the window shades lowered during the flight from Turkey, his response was striking. Reportedly, Trump said:
“Because you’re probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleazebags we have to deal with.”
He then said he faced a “threat all the time” and repeated that he was “number one” on Iran’s alleged list. Trump then added, “But if I go, you go, right?” “Perhaps someday you want to change professions.”

Security Concerns Had Reportedly Been Building Before the Trip
The apparent security concerns surrounding the trip were not entirely new. According to the BBC, U.S. intelligence had previously warned of a specific threat involving an attack on Trump or his aircraft.
The New York Times had also previously reported concerns surrounding the Qatari-donated jet, including that the Secret Service had urged Trump to switch aircraft on his way home from the NATO summit.
Several New York Times journalists were later summoned to testify under oath in connection with that reporting, while the Justice Department told the BBC it was investigating illegal leaks.

Questions Remain over the New Presidential Jet’s Defenses
Questions also remain about the defensive capabilities of the president’s different aircraft. The United States has spent months retrofitting the approximately $400 million Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8 for presidential use.
Older Air Force One aircraft have technology designed to help defeat incoming missiles, sources told CBS News, while the exact systems aboard the newer aircraft have not been publicly detailed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told CBS News that the new Air Force One was “perfectly safe for the president’s travels” and said it would receive further upgrades and enhancements in the fall, with the additional work expected to take about a month.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, meanwhile, did not directly confirm or deny the reported Turkey operation. He said the new Air Force One was a “state-of-the-art aircraft” equipped with security measures intended to protect the president and his staff.

But What About Everyone Left on the Apparent Decoy?
Another issue quickly emerged from the episode: what about everyone who remained aboard the apparent decoy aircraft?
Jose Zamora, regional director for the Americas at the Committee to Protect Journalists, said the administration had a responsibility to ensure that journalists covering the president were not unnecessarily exposed to danger.

Senate Democrats Are Now Demanding Answers
Now, lawmakers are demanding answers as well. According to NBC News, Senate Democrats have called for a briefing.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “The Senate should be immediately briefed on the Iranian threats against the President, the extraordinary measures taken to get him out of Turkey, any risks posed to U.S. personnel, and any threat to the homeland.”
Schumer added that it was “unacceptable that Congress was kept in the dark” and learned about the reported operation through news coverage.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal was similarly alarmed, focusing in particular on the people who remained aboard the original aircraft. “There has to be a congressional briefing because it involves not just the safety of the president,” Blumenthal said, according to the report.
“I want to know what precautions were taken to make sure that all of the passengers on that Air Force One, which was judged too dangerous for the president to fly on, what precautions were taken to keep the staff and reporters on that plane safe.”
The original reporting on the secret flight and the alleged use of Air Force One as a decoy was detailed by The Washington Post, helping bring the previously hidden operation into public view. Blumenthal went even further during an appearance on CNN with Kaitlan Collins.

As Newsweek reported, the Democratic senator described the circumstances surrounding the reported aircraft switch as “downright scary.” He also called the situation “unprecedented” and “surreal,” arguing that the war involving Iran had made the president, U.S. troops, Persian Gulf allies, and the wider world less safe.
