Miley Cyrus Makes First Public Appearance Since Dolly Parton’s Death — Fans Notice Something on Her Arm — Photos
Miley Cyrus has been photographed for the first time since Dolly Parton’s death, appearing somber outside a Los Angeles recording studio. But fans quickly focused on a small detail in the photos that may carry a deeply personal connection to her late godmother.
Miley Cyrus has stepped back into the public eye following the death of her godmother, Dolly Parton, from cancer, and her first photographed appearance has already raised plenty of questions.
As she arrived at a Los Angeles recording studio, however, it wasn’t simply Miley’s somber appearance that caught people’s attention — fans spotted something on her arm that may be especially meaningful. Miley was photographed on August 26, 2026, as she arrived at a Los Angeles recording studio, according to a report shared by TMZ.

Miley Steps Out in a Somber Mood
The “The Last Song” actress kept things understated for the outing, wearing an all-black outfit and appearing noticeably subdued as she made her way inside. There was also another detail that immediately stood out: a small lavalier microphone was clipped to her shirt, suggesting she may have been recording or filming something at the studio.
That detail alone was enough to get people talking, with one person reacting, “The chick just walk around with a microphone on her shirt?” But the microphone wasn’t the only thing drawing attention.

Her Look Had Fans Wondering What Happened
Miley’s sunglasses covered much of her face, but they did little to stop viewers from scrutinizing her appearance. Several people thought her eyes appeared puffy, with one commenter writing, “Her eyes must be so puffy from the constant crying.”
Another person bluntly reacted, “She looks broken.” A separate comment added, “Not her hiding her eyes behind sunglasses after crying her eyes out over Dolly’s death.”
Those reactions reflected the emotional weight surrounding Miley’s first photographed appearance since Dolly’s death. Still, the most intriguing discussion wasn’t actually about Miley’s face.

Then Fans Zoomed In on Her Arm
As the photos circulated, attention shifted to a much smaller detail. Viewers began wondering whether a marking visible on Miley’s arm could be a tattoo depicting her famous godmother. One person asked, “Is that a tat of Dolly on her arm? How cool.”
Another echoed the question more simply, “Is it Dolly on her arm?” At this point, the photos themselves are what have sparked the speculation. The comments do not establish that the marking is a portrait of Dolly, but the possibility was enough for fans to immediately connect the detail to the longtime bond between the two singers.
And that connection runs much deeper than a celebrity friendship.
Dolly and Miley’s Bond Began Before the Actress Was Born
Dolly’s relationship with Miley’s family dates back to 1992, when Billy Ray Cyrus was promoting his breakout country hit, “Achy Breaky Heart.”
Shortly after their first meeting, Dolly interviewed Billy Ray in an NBC segment. “I have to honestly say to the folks out there that this one is one of the nicest people you ever want to meet,” a very affectionate Dolly said about Billy Ray at the time.
The “Coat of Many Colors” singer met Billy Ray around that period and later took him on tour as her opening act, helping strengthen a friendship that would eventually extend to his daughter.
When Miley was born on November 23, 1992, Dolly was already close to her family. In an interview giving an account of their relationship, Dolly later recalled, “And then, when Miley came along, I just said, ‘she has to be my fairy goddaughter.'”
The bond became part of Miley’s childhood, with Dolly even appearing three times on Hannah Montana as Aunt Dolly.
Dolly Never Shied Away From Defending Miley
As Miley grew from a Disney child star into an adult pop performer, her increasingly provocative image became a frequent subject of public debate.

Miley went through a radical transformation starting in 2010 when she shocked the world with the provocative video to her song “Can’t Be Tamed,” the first promotional single from her album of the same name.

Dolly Parton, however, repeatedly expressed confidence in her goddaughter. In 2014, when Miley was included on Time’s list of the 100 Most Influential People, Dolly wrote a personal tribute explaining why she wasn’t particularly worried about Miley’s choices.
“If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her,” Dolly wrote. “But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.”
Dolly also understood why Miley had made such a dramatic break from her Hannah Montana image, writing, “She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever,” Dolly added about her goddaughter.

“And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did. She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her.” Rather than criticize her goddaughter, Dolly offered encouragement
“I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?”
Their Relationship Was More Than Family Talk
The pair also shared the stage several times over the years. Miley joined Dolly to perform “Jolene” during a celebration of Dollywood’s 25th anniversary, and the two later performed the song together on The Voice in 2016 alongside Pentatonix.

Dolly later described the song as being about “dreaming and hoping that we could all do better. It’s a good song for the times right now.”
Their connection also extended to acting. When Dolly’s Netflix anthology series Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings was being developed, Dolly revealed that she had once imagined Miley playing Jolene before “Footloose” star Julianne Hough ultimately took the role.
“Years back when I used to think of Jolene, you know, before Julianne came on, I used to think… I’d love — Miley would have been great at that as well. But Miley was doing other things. It wasn’t that kind of a thing, but she would have,” Dolly told ET.
Miley Has Said Dolly Taught Her More Than Style
Miley has also spoken about the influence Dolly had on her while growing up. Beyond admiring her godmother’s fashion and having access to her closet as a child, the “Wrecking Ball” singer highlighted the way the “I Will Always Love You” singer treated the people around her.
One lesson stayed with her in particular, “Never let success change your heart.”
