Woods has said he will take time off golf to rebuild after his recent arrest. In a statement shared on X, he penned, “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.”

The golfer vowed to return healthier, stronger, and more focused in his personal and professional life. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time,” Woods added.

Online fans reacted to Woods’ statement with a wave of support for his decision and renewed debate on whether he should still compete at the highest level. One fan wrote, “This one hits hard. Tiger Woods stepping away from golf to focus on his health and get treatment — respect for owning it and putting himself first.”

Another person said, “Good luck, Tiger. Wish I could watch you in the masters, but of course, you must do what’s best for you. We love you, brother. You are forever one of my heroes.” A different commenter declared, “He should play the Masters. He can win!”

Some fans, confident in his skill, concurred, “I don’t care [sic] the odds. If he plays, I am betting on him to win.” Another message highlighted his impact across generations, “I’m 40, and this guy was my childhood. From PGA video games on the PS1 to his comeback at the masters. Dude is the goat. All the best in your recovery ❤️‍🩹.”

The 2026 Masters Tournament is set to take place in Augusta, Georgia, at Augusta National Golf Club, with Tiger Woods included among the invitees despite his recent accident.

CBS Sports executives have declined to speculate on whether Woods will compete in the tournament. They have also remained non-committal about how his recent DUI arrest may be addressed during coverage.

The Masters is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 9, with CBS preparing for its 71st consecutive year of broadcasting the event. Now, they will also have to manage questions surrounding Woods’ situation.

A probable cause affidavit obtained earlier Tuesday, March 31, has shed more light on Woods’ car crash. The golfer told Martin County sheriff’s deputies that he had been looking down at his phone and adjusting the radio before the accident on a residential road near his Jupiter Island home.

Woods was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), causing property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful urine test after the accident occurred. Appearing before Martin County Court, he waived arraignment, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and demanded a jury trial.

The golfer, who was also involved in a separate DUI case in 2017, will again be represented by lawyer Douglas Duncan, who handled his defense in that earlier case.

In the latest incident, the 50-year-old’s Land Rover clipped another vehicle and overturned onto its side on Friday afternoon, March 27. Woods was arrested and held at the Martin County jail for a minimum of eight hours, as required by Florida law, and was released Friday night on $1,150 bail.

Investigators stated that Woods said he did not notice the vehicle that he hit had slowed down. The affidavit further alleges he attempted to pass it by crossing a double yellow line into oncoming traffic.

According to Sheriff John M. Budensiek, this resulted in him striking the front right side of a truck towing a trailer, causing him to lose control and roll his SUV. Deputies reported that Woods was alone in the vehicle and could not exit through the driver’s side due to the rollover.

He instead climbed out through the front passenger door. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Jeremy Bullard, was not injured. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

Budensiek noted that Woods showed “signs of impairment” at the scene, including profuse sweating and sluggish movement. Another deputy described his eyes as bloodshot and glassy, with slow speech and delayed responses during questioning.

Based on those observations, an officer determined he was not safe to operate a vehicle and placed him under arrest at 3:12 p.m. However, Woods told investigators he had not consumed alcohol.

The golfer said he had taken prescription medication earlier in the day, including pain medication and drugs for blood pressure and cholesterol. He also referenced prior surgeries and mobility issues affecting his physical condition.

Field sobriety tests were conducted at the scene, with Woods registering “triple zeros” on a breathalyzer test, indicating no alcohol in his system. However, he reportedly declined to provide a urine sample for further testing.

Authorities later indicated that he was not believed to be impaired by alcohol, but suggested that impairment from medication or another substance could not be ruled out. A subsequent search reportedly uncovered two pills identified as hydrocodone in his left pant pocket.

A source said following the crash that Woods has previously resisted hiring a personal driver, as he prefers not to have someone monitoring his movements or activities. The source added that he believes he is capable of driving himself.

The same source described him as someone who keeps a low profile, spending most of his time at home with his children, practicing golf, or playing video games. They also noted that he has long struggled with public attention and prefers to avoid scrutiny.

President Donald Trump also spoke out following the crash. Woods is in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the former wife of Donald Trump Jr. Trump said Woods has existing physical injuries but is doing well overall.

The president added that he had spoken with him and believed he was recovering positively. “He tested negative for alcohol, as you know, and he is under a tremendous physical pressure from his various ailments, you know, the back and the leg. He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain,” said Trump.

He added, “He’s an amazing guy. He’s an amazing athlete. He does have pain. He doesn’t have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain.”

Woods has previously been involved in other vehicle-related incidents. In 2009, he was injured after losing control of his SUV outside his Florida mansion. Authorities later said the vehicle struck a fire hydrant and a tree in a neighbor’s yard after he pulled out of his driveway in the early hours of the morning.

A local police chief at the time said his then-wife, Elin Nordegren, broke the vehicle’s rear window with a golf club in order to help him exit the car. Woods was taken to the hospital and later released in good condition, according to his spokesperson.

On February 23, 2021, Woods was involved in another serious crash in Los Angeles. He sustained severe, career-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle rollover accident. Authorities stated that there was no evidence of impairment in that incident and described the crash as purely accidental.

Tiger Woods underwent emergency surgery after suffering multiple fractures in his right leg, including comminuted open fractures to both the tibia and fibula, as well as significant damage to his ankle.

During that earlier period, as is the case now, he stepped away from the game to focus on recovery. Fans are now watching closely to see whether Woods will feature in the upcoming Masters or whether his current recovery break will keep him out of competition.
