Trump’s ‘controversial’ gesture towards King Charles and Queen Camilla

For many watching, the images were jarring: a U.S. president publicly breaking one of the clearest unwritten rules of royal etiquette at the very moment King Charles and Queen Camilla were trying to soothe a strained alliance. The king’s carefully crafted speech to Congress, rich with history and deference, was meant to reset the tone after months of Trump’s barbed remarks toward Britain and its prime minister. Yet outside the chamber, the headlines shifted from diplomacy to decorum, and to Trump’s insistence on physical familiarity with a monarch who is never supposed to be casually touched.

Online, the reaction split like a fault line. Critics saw arrogance and disrespect, a man “who has never heard of etiquette.” Supporters saw warmth, help, and human instinct overruling stiff formality. In the end, those brief gestures became a Rorschach test: was Trump undermining centuries of protocol, or simply exposing how fragile – and theatrical – these rituals of power really are?
