Jimmy Kimmel Defends His ‘Obvious’ Joke About Melania Trump After She Issued Scathing Rebuke: ‘It Was a Very Light Roast’

Late-night veteran Jimmy Kimmel is standing his ground.
During his Monday, April 27 monologue, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host, 58, addressed a firestorm involving the White House after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump called for his immediate firing. The escalating feud stems from a satirical “alternative” White House Correspondents’ Dinner monologue aired by Kimmel on April 23, two days before a security breach disrupted the actual event in Washington.
On Saturday, April 25, an armed individual attempted to enter the ballroom of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. While no one was harmed, the First Family has since linked the attempted violence to Kimmel’s comedic rhetoric.

‘Expectant Widow’ Joke Ignites Firestorm

The friction centers on a segment in which Kimmel used a digital composite to mimic the presence of the First Family. Referring to Melania Trump, Kimmel joked that she possessed “a glow like an expectant widow” and suggested she would spend her birthday “looking out a window and whispering, ‘What have I done?’”

The President took to Truth Social on Monday to blast the segment as “shocking” and “despicable.”

“He showed a fake video of the First Lady, Melania, and our son, Barron, like they were actually sitting in his studio… which they weren’t,” Trump wrote. He characterized Kimmel’s comments as a “call to violence” and demanded that Disney and ABC—the comedian’s professional home since 2003—fire him immediately.

Melania Trump echoed these sentiments on X, labeling Kimmel a “coward” and accusing him of spreading “hateful and violent rhetoric.” She argued that the network should “take a stand” and no longer allow him the “opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.”

Kimmel Responds: ‘Obviously a Joke’

Addressing the First Lady directly during his Monday broadcast, Kimmel denied any connection between his comedy and the weekend’s security threat. He clarified that the “expectant widow” line was “obviously a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together.”

“It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,” Kimmel said. “It was not by any stretch a call to assassination, and they know that I’ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence in particular.”

While Kimmel expressed sincere sympathy for the trauma the First Family experienced during the Saturday incident, stating, “we should come together and be best,” he dismissed the notion that a joke made three days prior influenced the events. He pointedly played a clip of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who had previously teased that there would be “some shots fired in the room tonight” regarding the President’s own planned remarks.

A History of Friction

The current standoff marks the second time in recent months that Kimmel’s future at ABC has been called into question by the administration.

On September 17, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled from the air “indefinitely” following the host’s monologue regarding the death of Charlie Kirk. At the time, FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened action against the network. Though Kimmel returned six days later, the President claimed the White House had been informed the show was officially cancelled.

“It was like deja vu for me today with all the news channels talking about this,” Kimmel remarked Monday, noting the familiar cycle of political pressure on his program.

The monologue also featured sharp barbs regarding the President’s past association with Jeffrey Epstein—claims the First Lady has consistently denied—and a satirical take on the President’s decision to forgo a traditional comedian at the annual Correspondents’ Dinner.

As of Monday evening, neither ABC nor its parent company, Disney, had issued an official response to the President’s demand for Kimmel’s termination.
