‘Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Gilmore Girls’ actor dies at 87

Dion Anderson’s life was a tapestry of service, art, and restless curiosity. Long before most viewers ever saw his face on screen, he was a soldier in the U.S. Army Finance Corps, a scholar chasing degrees across continents, and a teacher bringing Shakespeare to classrooms in Florida. His work with Voice of America, and later in South Vietnam and Iran, placed him at the crossroads of history, helping build television and radio networks while mentoring local staff, teaching English, and nurturing new voices in theatre and the arts.

Only after those chapters did he step fully into the spotlight, directing theater in West Virginia and eventually carving out a steady acting career. As Head Bull Haig in The Shawshank Redemption and Burt in Gilmore Girls, he brought quiet gravity and humanity to every frame. Friends remember a man who loved painting, music, nature, and animals, whose kindness matched his talent. The tributes now flooding in feel less like farewell and more like a promise: that a life so full, and so generously lived, will not be forgotten.
