A lot has been said about Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, but she had yet to speak out on her behalf amid allegations that she is transgender.
The allegations against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif were sparked by the IBA, who disqualified her from the 2023 world championships after she failed an unspecified gender eligibility test.
Imane Khelif of Algeria would be cleared by the IOC and won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds following two vicious punches to the face.
Khelif was back in action over the weekend. On Saturday, she beat Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori in a unanimous decision, clinching an Olympic medal.
Her victory, which came hours after International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach defended its decision to allow her and fellow boxer Lin Yu-ting to compete, also came with a statement.
I dedicate this medal to the world, and to all the Arabs, and I tell you, ‘Long live Algeria!’” she told reporters, per NBC.
While fighting back tears and having an Algerian flag wrapped around her back as she spoke, Imane Khelif delivered a powerful statement about her gender. “I want to tell the entire world that I am a female, and I will remain a female,” she said.
Imane Khelif had a huge cheering section for her during her latest fight as many were chanting her name, “Imane, Imane, Imane!” and waving Algerian flags.
After all was said and done, the judges gave her 10-9 for every round except for one, who called the second round 10-8 for the Algerian.
Imane Khelif Now Guaranteed To Get Medal At Paris Olympics
Boxer Imane Khelif of Algeria clinched a medal Saturday at the Paris Olympics despite so much backlash sent her way about her gender.
Khelif defeated Anna Luca Hamori of Hungary 5:0 in the quarterfinals of the women’s 66-kilogram bout.
Because of that win, Khelif will win at least a bronze medal for the second victory of her controversial second trip to the Olympics.
She then won her opening bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy abandoned the fight after just 46 seconds.]
