A massive trade proposal has the Houston Texans sending third-year wide receiver John Metchie III to an NFC team in a move that could shake up the 2024 NFL postseason race.
Given Houston’s crowded wide receiver room, it’s safe to say that John Metchie would benefit from a fresh start. GM Nick Caserio acquired All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a deal with the Buffalo Bills to complement young stars Nico Collins and Tank Dell.
Throw in star running back Joe Mixon and the presence of standout tight end Dalton Schultz, and it’s hard to see how Metchie would hit his ceiling on a star-studded CJ Stroud-led Houston offense.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay proposed a blockbuster trade idea that would see the Texans send John Metchie to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft selection:

The Saints have a pair of star weapons in do-it-all running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Chris Olave, but they could definitely use more depth in the receiver room. And a player like John Metchie might hit his potential in a New Orleans offense that has struggled with consistency since Drew Brees’ retirement in 2021.
Diggs exceeded 1,000 receiving in each of his four years with the Bills. Collins had a breakout year in 2023 with 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns, and Dell had a 47-709-7 stat line in 11 games.
The Texans kick off their 2024 season on Sunday with a road contest against the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts. The Saints will welcome the Carolina Panthers to the Caesars Superdome in their season opener.
John Metchie Could Flourish In New Orleans
The Saints are bringing back practically the same offensive core as last year. The main difference is that Klint Kubiak was hired to replace longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, who was let go after a frustrating 2023 season.
Metchie’s game-changing speed and ability to stretch the field could make him a difference-maker in New Orleans’ offense. Opposing defenses would be focused on Olave and Kamara, allowing Metchie to draw favorable 1-on-1 matchups that could take this New Orleans offense to another level.
